I would like to tell you about an unexpected but highly pleasant event that I encountered about 2 years ago. That was a cancelled flight in Frankfurt Airport in the summer of 2017.

In July 2017, I travelled from Frankfurt to Hanoi with Vietnam Airlines, the national carrier of Vietnam. I booked the flight about two months before the departure date, and believed that nothing would go wrong on the day of my flight because my experience with Vietnam Airlines up to that point had been strongly desirable.

However, after I completed my check-in and immigration clearance procedures, the airline announced that the flight to Hanoi would be delayed due to a technical error of the airplane. The flight was supposed to depart at 2PM local time, but passengers had to wait anxiously until 7PM. At 7PM, Vietnam Airlines confirmed that the flight had to be cancelled and all passengers would be booked on the flight to Hanoi the next morning.

Initially, I felt deeply disappointed with this news. Nevertheless, what happened afterwards showed to me that Vietnam Airlines was truly a professional and world-class airline. It offered me a free stay at a 5-star hotel in Frankfurt with all meal and transport costs covered. The next morning, furthermore, I also received a meal voucher to be used in Frankfurt airport, as well as a hand-written letter of apology from a representative of Vietnam Airlines.

After all, I would still recommend Vietnam Airlines to anyone wishing to travel to and from Vietnam. In addition, in my opinion, the experience is a stark reminder for airlines to constantly improve their customer services and swiftly handle cases of flight delay and cancellation.

Describe an occasion when you unexpectedly met someone you know. You should say:

- who it was

- where you met this person

- what you did when you met

- and explain why you were surprised to meet this person.

Well, it doesn’t happen a lot when you unexpectedly meet someone you know. But a couple of days ago when I was out for lunch, I bumped into a high school classmate whom I haven’t seen since we graduated.

I was walking along the street when I saw him standing in front of a restaurant. He hasn’t changed a bit, so I recognized him right away. I approached him and said hi; however, it took him a while to realize that I was his high school classmate. At that moment, I felt very awkward. Luckily, it didn’t last long and we started to give each other a quick update about our lives recently, such as where we are working currently, our families and, of course, we swapped phone numbers and promised to keep in touch in future.

Since we were both in a hurry, we didn’t spend much time chatting with each other. However, it always feels good when you unexpectedly meet a long-lost friend. If we had had more time, we’d probably have reminisced about our high school memories with all the crazy things that we did back then.
